The Song of the Lark

The winsome song of the ascending lark
Hails the gentle soul and loving heart
Ever heard in silence sweet
Soul and heart in grace do meet.

Rose Marie Raccioppi

The Song of the Lark, Jules Adolphe Breton, French, 1827-1906, oil on canvas, 1884, The Art Institue of Chicago, Henry Field Memorial Collection.

very sweet. The picture adds to the scenery of the poem.

The lark - inspired the poem, the work of art and a book bearing the same title - how telling indeed is the song of a bird to those who choose to listen...

This painting is in my opinion the single greatest piece that the art institute has to offer. No photo can do it justice. It literally stops you in your tracks as you walk into the room.

Breton's painting move me. It is worth a trip to Chicago to see it. It always brings tears to my eyes.
